Property viewed 'safer than cash'
The majority of British people believe buying property is now a safer place to put their money than saving with a bank or building society.
Research for the BBC Two series, The Truth About Property, found 53% of respondents believed owning property was safer than cash.
The poll took place in the aftermath of the Northern Rock crisis, the first run on a British bank in nearly 150 years.
Review finds affordable homes are achievable
An independent review has said the Government's pledge to boost affordable housing is achievable.
The publication of The Callcut review, commissioned in December 2006, has prompted the Government to announce a major new drive to speed up the delivery of new greener, more affordable homes for first-time buyers and families. This includes a number of measures to make the building process more transparent and speed up new home development.
The report from The Callcutt Review confirmed the housing industry could deliver the additional 240,000 homes per year needed by 2016 and 3 million more homes by 2020. But it added the challenge would be ensuring homes are built where they are needed at an affordable price and that they meet the zero carbon targets set by the Government.
Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper, said the Government's aim wasn't just to build more homes, but to build better, greener homes.
The Government will respond formally to the review in early 2008.
